“Gain extensive knowledge through reading and broaden horizons through travel”. An educational trip that transcends national boundaries is like a key that unlocks the door of wisdom deep in the hearts of Green Island students at Shenyang City University (Shenyang City University is located where the Green Island Forest Park used to be. Therefore, Green Island is usually used to refer to Shenyang City University). In November 2024, 17 students from the majors of Tourism Management, Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, Networkand New Media, and Law embarked on a 6-day journey of knowledge and exploration to Japan with great expectations.
During these brief yet fulfilling 6 days, the teachers and students of Shenyang City University were immersed in the unique cultural and academic atmosphere of Japan. They strolled through the campuses of Waseda University and the University of Tokyo, experiencing the profound cultural heritage and advanced academic concepts of these two world-renowned universities. At cultural and scientificresearch exhibition halls such as the Panasonic Center Tokyo and the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Cultural History, students witnessed the perfect integration of technological innovation and historical heritage, and deeply realized the power of science and technology to promote the progress of the times and culture to retain the national roots.
Exploring Famous Universities and Appreciating Historical Changes
With a thirst for knowledge, the teachers and students of Shenyang City University stepped into the halls of two top universities, Waseda University and the University of Tokyo.
When they first arrived at Waseda University, this world-class research university founded in 1882 exudes a strong "humanistic atmosphere". Teachers and students visited the campus landmarks, explored its cultural heritage, and truly felt the strong academic atmosphere and vigorous campus cultural vitality that pervaded every corner of the campus.
During the study at Waseda University, teachers and students were impressed by the “Nutrition” course. This seemingly professional course, which is closely related to everyone's life, has overturned the traditional perception. Amazingly, nutritional knowledge is taught to elementary school students in Japan. Under the explanation of the Japanese teacher, the teachers and students gained a deeper understanding of Japanese culture. During the interaction, the Japanese teacher asked a question that triggered everyone's thinking. Why do Japanese people say the phrase “I'm going to start eating” before a meal? The students actively participated in the discussion yetthe answer was unexpected. It turned out that the Japanese say this sentence to food before meals, reflecting their reverence for food. This is the same as the Chinese Tang Dynasty poem “Compassion for Farmer” in the expression of the feelings of cherishing food, which makes teachers and students deeply realize the importance of cherishing food and being grateful for what they have, and understand that they should have a sense of reverence towards all things.
Waseda University, known as the "university with the most clubs in the world," currently has over 3000 clubs, all of which are rich in local customs and have their own characteristics, so that teachers and students can enjoy the unique charm of the culture of different cultural backgrounds. After delving into the classroom, teachers and students learned that Waseda University has achieved remarkable research results in various fields such as Japanese language education, economics, law and other fields, and has won multiple national honors. Guo Zihan, a student from Class 3 of the 2024 Applied Psychology Program, said, "Waseda University focuses on cultivating students' practical abilities and emphasizes the combination of theory and practice. This teaching model is very similar to ours, as it can stimulate students' enthusiasm for seeking common ground while reserving differences and multidimensional learning.”
Compared to Waseda University's diverse vitality, the University of Tokyo exudes a quaint and solemn atmosphere. As one of the oldest and most renowned universities in Japan, the University of Tokyo has top-notch academic resources in the fields of science and engineering, as well as humanities and social sciences. Many international cutting-edge research achievements have been born here. In the exchange and interaction with teachers and students from the University of Tokyo, teachers and students from Shenyang City University were impressed by their deep exploration of knowledge and persistent pursuit of truth. This spirit will also inspire them to constantly move forward on the path of learning and work, broaden their horizons, and pursue their life ideals. Yu Yue, from 2023 Finance Program said, "At the University of Tokyo, I learned many new perspectives and ways of thinking to approach problems, which provided me with new ideas for dealing with problems in the future.”
Bridging Ancient and Modern Cultures: Experiencing the Confluence of Technology and History
During their educational journey, the teachers and students visited the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Cultural History. Established in 1967 and designed in the Baroque architectural style, the museum was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1969. Like a silent storyteller of history, it systematically showcases the developmental trajectory and transformations of Kanagawa Prefecture and Japan as a whole across various historical periods.
Among these, the mortise-and-tenon structure, originating from China, left a profound impression on the visiting teachers and students. After crossing the seas to Japan, this technique seamlessly integrated with local architectural styles. From ancient wooden temples to traditional residences, Japanese craftsmen, driven by unwavering dedication to their craft, meticulously joined every piece of wood. With exceptional skill, they constructed sturdy and aesthetically pleasing buildings without using a single nail or rivet. This method has shone brightly in Japan’s wooden architectural heritage. The temple’s overhanging eaves and the intricate brackets of traditional homes vividly embody the essence of craftsmanship and the spirit of “Takumi.”
In awe, Gao Bohua, a student from Class 4 of the 2023 Law program, remarked, “By touching the temple beams and feeling the precise interlocking of their grooves and tenons, it was as if I could truly connect with the veins of history. This experience deepened my understanding of the essence of heritage. The emphasis on and application of the mortise-and-tenon structure not only reflects the Japanese craftsmen's dedication to their craft but also serves as a vivid testament to the brilliance of Chinese civilization shining on the global stage.”
The Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Cultural History, with its invaluable artifacts, detailed historical materials, and vivid displays, offered every teacher and student on the trip a more comprehensive and profound understanding of Japanese history. It added a rich and vibrant chapter to their educational journey, enabling them to gain fruitful insights into cultural exchange and heritage. Moreover, it deepened their appreciation of the intricate connections between Chinese and Japanese historical cultures, highlighting the importance of mutual learning and shared development between the two nations.
Bidding farewell to the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Cultural History, rich in historical and cultural heritage, the students arrived at the technologically advanced Tokyo Panasonic Center. From the moment they entered, they were deeply impressed by the overwhelming technological atmosphere, experiencing firsthand how the power of technology has seamlessly integrated into every corner of daily life. In the exhibit area, the teachers and students had the opportunity to experience the fascinating technology of real object animation imaging. Witnessing ordinary objects transform instantly into vivid animated visuals under the application of cutting-edge technology ignited their curiosity and excitement.
Next, they visited the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Center, embarking on a learning journey filled with challenges and rewards. Immersing themselves in a series of well-designed specialty courses, they gained valuable knowledge and hands-on experience. During the fire escape simulation, the realistic settings and tense atmosphere helped them grasp the importance of staying calm and responding correctly in emergencies. Learning to use fire extinguishers effectively equipped them with a practical life-saving skill, teaching them how to handle fires with the proper tools. The earthquake simulation provided a visceral understanding of the immense power of nature and the destructive force of seismic disasters.
Yang Hesong, a student from Class 3 of the 2023 Law program, shared his thoughts: “Through this series of engaging and practical courses, my awareness of disaster prevention and mitigation has reached unprecedented heights. I no longer have a vague concept of disasters like earthquakes and fires. Instead, I truly understand how to protect myself and others in the face of danger. This knowledge and these skills make me feel enriched and reassured. They also heightened my awareness of the fragility and value of life, as well as the importance and necessity of learning disaster preparedness. This visit to the Tokyo Panasonic Center has significantly advanced my understanding of technology and safety awareness. It has added a unique and profound dimension to my education, offering valuable insights that will enrich both my studies and my life moving forward.”
